Corporate Taxation course – this SATURDAY!!!
The Strategic Business Program (SBP) is excited to announce a new course: Econ x430.70 Corporate Taxation. This course will count as 1 unit of Accounting Subject for the new CPA license requirements.
This new course was designed and will be taught by Jim Brewer, a Tax Partner at PwC.
This course will provide students with an introduction to U.S. corporate taxation as well as:
- Provide an overview of tax laws/concepts and compliance issues related to tax reporting for corporate taxpayers;
- Define and understand income-related topics such as gross receipts; interest and dividend income; and income from rents, royalties and ownership of partnership interests;
- Define and understand deduction-related issues such as cost of goods sold, compensation, bad debts, taxes, charitable contributions, amortization, and depreciation expense;
- Special topics will include alternative minimum tax; calculation and reporting of gains and losses; net operating losses; tax credits; the tax calculation; and estimated tax payments, penalties, and extensions.
Please be aware that this is a different format then the other SBP courses, and will be an all day Saturday course.
Class meeting: SATURDAY, MAY 11, 2013 from 8:00 – 5:00pm.

What is the optimal business location? Does the right address add value to a corporation’s brand? Is a highly visible location with high traffic a good way of advertising? Is it best to locate a firm within a cluster of similar firms? Should firms relocate? We will explore these types of questions for a variety of businesses to determine if a general location strategy exists.

Summer Internship Units via SBP
Do you have a summer internship? Do you need to be enrolled in a course for your internship? Do you need units for your CPA license?
Then the internship course through SBP is for you!
You can enroll in either:
Econ x430.98 – Accounting Internship Seminar (2 units)
Econ x430.99 – Business Internship Seminar (2 units)
Each internship requires:
- 45 hours of employer contact
- Enrollment via the extension website (see above) and completed entry questionnaire prior to internship (form should be picked up in the Career Connection office – 2119 North Hall)
- Participation in one 3 hour seminar after the internship is completed; at which time students must give a 15 minute presentation on either an Accounting (x430.98) or Business (x430.99) topic related to your internship.
You may enroll in both courses but this requires:
- 90 hours of contact time
- 2 presentations
- 2 – 3 hour class meetings
You should only be enrolled in both courses if you have an internship at an accounting firm.
All 4 units can count towards your CPA license, but only 2 can be used towards the completion of the certificate.

Junior Financial Analyst – Upper Deck (Carlsbad)

Summary
An entry-level position in the finance department which is responsible for providing ground-level support to the financial analysis team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by an individual assigned to this job. Other duties may be assigned.
·Assists with developing the Annual Operating Plan process.
·Updates the Company’s monthly financial forecast.
·Analyzes monthly expense variance against budgeted numbers.
·Creates and analyzes product line profitability and production variance analysis.
·Creates and reviews Manufacturing Cost Request Analysis for portfolio products from idea, conception, to final quote for shipment.
·Tracks the costing stage of the products
·Supports departments financial analysis needs as necessary.
·Ad hoc financial analysis projects.
Education/Years Experience
·Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics, or equivalent experience.
·6 months to 1 year experience.
